MFL

One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.

Intent

It is our intent at Mevagissey Primary School to provide all of our children an inclusive and high quality Modern Foreign Language (MFL) education, which aims for children to understand and respond to the spoken and written language, to communicate effectively, both in speaking and writing. The MFL curriculum allows children to recognise patterns and sounds and engage in conversations, using accurate pronunciation. MFL encourages children to broaden their vocabulary and enables them to use the skills they have

learnt in real life. We provide a languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

At Mevagissey Primary School, at Key Stage 2, we made the decision for our MFL to be French as it is one of the most spoken languages in the world, however we strive to provide children with opportunities to experience a range of other languages.  It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.

Implementation

At Mevagissey Primary School, we deliver a scheme of learning in MFL that meets the National Curriculum requirements issued by the DfE. Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language. In KS2, children are taught regular language sessions by their class teacher, using the on-line programme Languagenut which is aligned to the National Curriculum expectations for Modern Foreign Languages.

Each unit from the scheme is designed to be taught over a half term, with six lessons per unit. Each class in each year group will have an overview of units to be taught during the academic year to ensure substantial progress and learning is achieved. Each teaching unit is divided into 6 fully planned lessons, which has been designed to support staff with audio recordings of all the French content with accompanying English translations. Units are progressive within themselves as subsequent lessons within a unit build on the language and knowledge taught in previous lessons. As pupils progress though the lessons in a unit they will build their knowledge and develop the complexity of the language they use. Using Languagenut, enabled the children to improve their skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking, as well as revise key vocabulary and develop sentence building techniques through conversational work, singing activities, stories and games.

All KS2 pupils at Mevagissey Primary School have access to Language Nut. Pupils can download the app or log on to the website to complete a variety of activities. Every term there are a variety of competitions for pupils to take part in. Every month we hold the Language Nutter of the month competition. The children compete to earn as many points as they can whilst revising key vocabulary and developing their language skills.

Impact

Our MFL curriculum will ensure all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures.

These are as follows:

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

•speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

•discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
